Director of Pharmacy in San Francisco CA The following job descriptions are considered to be "typical" job assignments and are not intended to be complete work statements. Employees may also perform other related duties as assigned or required by the workload. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services, provide a full range of services for patients cared for by the Medical Center as well as its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to, drug procurement, storage, and security; safe accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department encompasses with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, research, and public service. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Department of Pharmaceutical Services share its philosophy of pharmaceutical care. The purpose of this position is manage the activities within the central pharmacy area (CUDA) as well as clinical an operational activities on all adult acure and critical care areas. This includes satellite pharmacies servicing adult care nursing units This position will require a close and effective working relationship with physicians, nurses and other departments in the medical center as well as with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and the School of Pharmacy. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Direct supervision of 2-3 Supervisors. In addition, this position will indirectly be managing the activities of approximately 50 Pharmacy Techs and 20 Pharmacists. DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Under general supervision, the Assistant Director’s duties and essential job functions are based in scope and duties requiring extensive experience and knowledge of the healthcare system, pharmacy services, and therapeutics. This includes having administrative responsibilities for an organizationally distinct and complex pharmacy service and may typically supervise non-pharmacists, for example pharmacy assistant, office billing assistant, and senior administrative analyst. The Assistant Director of Adult Care and Central Operations (ACCO) will have an on-going responsibility for the management of the central unit dose area as well as all satellite pharmacies that service adult care units. In addition, the Assistant Director of ACCO will have oversight of all clinical programs servicing adult care units and/or patients. This position is responsible for keeping current on changes with the various regulatory agencies that have oversight and jurisdiction over the medical center. 1) MEDICAL AND PATIENT CARE RESPONSIVENESS A) Represents the department in interaction with medical center personnel, community groups, other health care organizations and through active participation on committees, task forces, etc., when appropriate or as assigned. B) Coordinates problem-solving efforts with patient care providers to assure standards for service and quality. C) Responsive to patients, parents and visitors by assuring that services are provided in a timely manner with courtesy and compassion within a positive environmental setting. D) Monitors the departmental quality assurance program and facilitates response/solution to quality assurance issues. E) Assures continuity of department operations by coordinating the technical/administrative support. F) Develops departmental policies/procedures and goals/objectives that are consistent with those of the Medical Center organization. 2) COMMUNICATION A) Meets regularly with investigators as well as drug vendor study representatives to provide information and updates on medical center/department activities. D) Maintains current knowledge of technical/professional field, the healthcare industry, medical center activities and contributes same in discussions at various committee meetings, lectures, and other forums. 3) PLANNING A) Identifies resource needs, operational problems, shifts in technological-treatment trends and develops appropriate plans to address. B) Assesses service demand and facilitates staffing and/or service adjustments, space utilization, equipment functioning, etc.. Assist with coordinating the support services of other departments and/or external agencies. C) Establishes and evaluates, work-system designs and standards and protocols to enhance departmental productivity. D) Develops long-term plan of department operations, services and programs relative to Investigational Drug Program. 4) LEADERSHIP A) Serves as a role model for personnel through management practices of honesty, integrity and fairness. B) Promotes teamwork by encouraging personnel participation in departmental activities and by enhancing their awareness and knowledge of the medical center’s objectives.
