About
Pharmacists With A Mission.....
Many
charitable organizations involved in medical missions
need help in organizing Pharmacy Services. We find
that Pharmacists are the best qualified to offer
assistance in this area.
At least 50% of every medical mission is spent
dispensing medications and knowledge to the patient.
Doctors and Nurses with other support team members
have so much work to accomplish; a
Pharmacist
can provide the organization his expertise and
skills on a medical mission.

Let us examine why a Pharmacist is an important member of the healthcare team.....
Knowledge
of a broad range of drug information:
In addition to knowing about side effects,
interactions & contraindications, storage & stability, dosage & administration,
drug therapy, etc. ;
appropriate drug selection
and
formulary
is essential for the Pharmacist to suggest to the
medical mission team & organization.
Expert
in the operation and maintenance of a Pharmacy:
Pharmacists work in many fields of Pharmacy; i.e., Hospitals, retail customer Pharmacies,
Outpatient Clinics, Research, Drug Manufacturing, etc. They can also offer their help in
general operations, dispensing, drug inventory and
purchasing . Because of the major variance of
drug cost
in the world, Pharmacists can help avoid the high
costs of medications. They are adaptable in setting up
and maintaining a Pharmacy on a medical mission in any
environment and have many other skills to offer.
In 1999 Steve and Susan Garvin (both Pharmacists)
founded a non-profit
charitable
organization with humanitarian and educational goals
entitled:
"
PHARMACISTS WITH A MISSION, INC. "
Since
1996, Steve has participated on many medical missions
with charitable organizations to developing countries.
He also helped with local free clinics that assist the
poor with medications in North Carolina. From this and
other observations, he found out some alarming facts:
"
I am amazed that on most typical volunteer medical
missions, there are not enough Pharmacists to
participate. Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health
Professionals, and other team members are overworked
and do not have time to devote to their patients. This
is an area where Pharmacists can be an asset and also
assist in educating patients about their medications
and upgrade health Pharmacy standards in the clinics
and hospitals in the participating country."

What
Have We Accomplished Since 1999?
Thus far, we have participated on fourteen medical
missions to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras,
the Phillipines, and Vietnam. Besides our main goals
of educating charitable organizations and lecturing at
free clinics and Hospitals, we devote our time and
resources by purchasing and delivering collected
donated medications to any country we participate on a
medical mission. Humanitarian work continues from the
host charitable organization goals on a medical
mission from us. In addition, we assist donating
to institutions of the blind and retarded, orphanages,
free clinics, foundations for the poor and sick, and
are involved in any health projects we choose.
Certainly, contacting Pharmacists to participate on a
medical mission is just one of our major goals!
