Services business of Cardinal Health compounds and dispenses
radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic use by nuclear medicine
departments in hospitals and outpatient clinics. Nuclear Pharmacy Services
distributes these time-critical pharmaceuticals to approximately 8,000 customers
through an integrated network of more than 170 domestic nuclear pharmacies.

How do I become a nuclear pharmacist?
With a degree from an
accredited college of pharmacy, you may be one of the select pharmacists we
seek. If so, Cardinal Health will provide you with nuclear certification
training, which provides the "Authorized User" designation to those pharmacists
who successfully complete the program. During this intensive training program,
you will receive instruction in all categories required by the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC). After completing the 500 hours of on-the-job
training, you become certified as a nuclear pharmacist. During the training
program, Cardinal Health will provide you with full pay, in addition to paying
all costs for travel and living expenses while you receive your training.
Cardinal Health conducts nuclear certification training at the Nuclear Pharmacy
Services office in Dublin, Ohio. The Ohio State University and Purdue University
both offer nuclear certification training programs as well. Additionally, the
University of New Mexico and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
offer an online training program.
Duties of a nuclear pharmacist

How do I become a nuclear pharmacy technician?
Based on your skills and experience, you may be one of the select nuclear pharmacy technicians we seek. Strong preference is given to Certified Pharmacy Technicians and candidates with experience in IV Pharmacy. Cardinal Health will provide you with nuclear certification training, which provides the "Authorized User" designation to those pharmacy technicians who successfully complete the program.
Duties of a nuclear pharmacy technician?
- Prepares prescriptions by typing labels, entering information into a computer system and obtaining Staff Pharmacist approval.
- Reconstitutes medication according to applicable state laws and obtain Staff Pharmacist endorsement.
- Draws doses either in a syringe or vial and obtain Staff Pharmacist approval.
- Performs quality assurance tests on instruments and pharmaceuticals in accordance with Federal, State, Company and manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Receives, documents, and stores incoming and outgoing pharmaceuticals according to the Department of Transportation and Company guidelines.
- Maintains computer inventory and records to ensure proper utilization of materials and accounting for all RAM and Rx drugs.
- Prepackages, labels and maintains related control records of unit or multiple dose packages pursuant to appropriate policies and procedures.
